Spring has barely arrived and we are already dreaming of an exultant garden, full of plants, flowers and, why not, some incipient fruit to be able to taste later. We love living outdoors, and it is in this corner of the house where we will spend most of the time until the cold weather returns. In Capcovers we give you some ideas so that, in addition to enjoying nature, you can do your bit to take care of it and maintain it. Some simple gestures through which you will reduce your environmental footprint and improve your environment.
Vegetation
When choosing the type of vegetation you want in your garden, always take into account the environmental factor in order to create a long-lasting and sustainable green space. The first basic rule is to make efficient and responsible use of available resources. Therefore, always choose native and low water-demanding plants. This is especially important in certain areas where water is a scarce commodity. Following this same premise, we recommend replacing grass (it can consume up to 61 liters/m2 depending on the variety) with other permeable soil options to favor rainwater absorption (paths with logs, rocks, bricks or tiles spaced a few centimeters apart).
To care for and maintain your garden always green and healthy, avoid the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. If you take care to have a good substrate from the beginning, the plants will grow properly and you will not need to add fertilizers. On the other hand, if a pest appears, you always have the option of making your own remedies based on common elements such as banana peels, coffee grounds, nettle or wood ashes.
Finally, rather than manual or sprinkler irrigation, have an automatic drip irrigation system. Not only will you ensure that they will not lack water, as it is localized, you will avoid evaporation losses to the maximum. If you also group the different species according to their needs and program irrigation by zones, you will increase irrigation efficiency.
The furniture
If you have to renew the furniture of the terrace, always bet on sustainable or recycled materials. There are many alternatives, from traditional wrought iron, which also withstands the outdoors very well, those bearing the FSC seal of wood from forests with responsible environmental management, and, of course, those made from recycled material. There are many options for dressing them. Play with fabrics and colors to create unique spaces.
To illuminate the long summer nights, always choose the option of low consumption, LED luminaires or solar lamps. In addition to energy savings, the latter will give you more possibilities to create cozy corners regardless of access to the mains. When choosing the latter, take into account the IP rating for protection against humidity, thermal shock or dust to make them durable.
The swimming pool
Some tips for a more sustainable maintenance for the pool we already left you in another of our articles.
At Capcovers we are aware that the use of our covers favors a responsible use of natural resources: water saving, less consumption of chemical products for maintenance and cleaning, and even easier winterization.
With a manual roof, we also avoid the use of electricity and protect the environment. However, there is another possibility to enjoy the advantages of an automatic roof and remain sustainable: the solar photovoltaic powered roof. Using 100% green energy, it is totally efficient without leaving any environmental footprint. On the other hand, it is perfect for installations where it is difficult to run the power cable to the motor.
As you have read, taking care of the environment is very simple. It just takes a little bit of willpower to minimize our impact and let nature follow its rhythm. Here are a few tips, but we are sure you know many more. Share them with us in the comments!
