Pool maintenance is much more tedious when it’s cold and rainy. We are not simply referring to the laziness of getting up from the couch and leaving the warm home, no. In autumn and winter the pool suffers a series of problems that you will not find in warmer seasons. Low temperatures, rain and wind facilitate the accumulation of leaves, branches, dirt, etc. and make the water more unhealthy.
We have talked on another occasion about the specific care that your pool needs during the months of inactivity. Already then we advised the covers as the simplest and most economical option, in the medium and long term. In addition to all the advantages it has when it comes to facilitating the most usual maintenance in autumn and winter, after a stormy situation the only thing you will have to do is to control the amount of water that may have accumulated on the cover. In this way you will avoid deformation. If you have installed a bilge pump, you can skip this step, because you know that it will be activated automatically when necessary to empty the excess water. It would be good to clean the dirt on the cover (with a simple broom and a hose you can do it in 10 minutes). In case it is a fixed cover, check again the moorings to prevent the plastic from sinking into the pool. Normally this does not happen, but it is better to be safe.
Maintenance of a pool without a cover
If you have bravely opted to leave your pool uncovered, it is important to clean the water immediately when the rainy days are over. Run the filter as long as necessary. Pay special attention to the filter – clean it if necessary – and use a pool cleaner to make sure you leave as little dirt behind as possible to prevent the growth of lichens and other organisms.
You should also be aware that, in general, temperatures will tend to rise, which will make it easier for algae to multiply and the water will turn green. In addition, the pH and chlorine of the water will be altered, so bacteria and fungi will attack the pool. Remember to adjust the values to normal levels to prevent this from happening.
Finally, if the amount of rain has been such that the water level has overflowed, drain it a little. You will help the skimmers to perform their function of collecting the dirt along the upper waterline.
