Although at Capcovers we do not deal with the construction or maintenance of swimming pools, from time to time we like to talk about all the problems we find within the sector. Something that has recently come to our attention is how a poorly maintained pool can trigger a whole series of catastrophic misfortunes. If the pool is ours, we will take the blame, but what happens when the pool is “inherited” and we have not known how to see it? In this entry we tell you what you have to check to know the real state of a swimming pool and to save you some scares.
When we are deciding to buy -or rent- a second-hand house we take into account aspects such as the area in which it is located, the surface, the general condition, the views, the distribution of the spaces, the existence of a garden or outdoor area… In most cases, the fact that it also has a swimming pool is a positive point, but do we know how to value it correctly? If we have never had one, possibly we lack knowledge to determine its real state of conservation. To pay attention to this point is important, since any problem or hidden defect can entail an unforeseen economic expense and delay its enjoyment, headaches apart.
What to check to determine the state of conservation of a swimming pool
When we talk about swimming pool we must remember that we are not only referring to the pool shell, but also to the purification system. With this in mind, we leave you a list of basic checks to take into account:
In the glass
- Ideally, the pool should be full, to rule out water leaks or problems with the filtration system.
- If the coating is made of gresite or tiles, we will check that the pieces are still in place and perfectly hooked. It is also important that the joint is in perfect condition, otherwise it will facilitate its detachment and the accumulation of dirt. If the coating is based on a liner or PVC sheet, we will make sure that it has not formed strange pockets.
- All the built-in elements must be in perfect condition. We will verify the skimmers, the baskets, the sump, the impulsion nozzles, the cleaner and the conductions. In case of having lighting, check the operation and condition of both the projectors and the junction boxes.
In the filtration system
- The various valve control valves must be easy to handle.
- The clock and the various circuit breakers are working properly.
- When starting the pump or motor we did not hear any strange noises.
- We will carefully observe if there are water leaks in any duct.
- The filtration must operate within the correct pressure range (green zone of the pressure gauge).
- We will make sure that the motor pre-filter basket and the cleaner system work smoothly.
Security
On the other hand, we cannot forget the security measures. This point cannot be ignored, especially if we have children or pets at home for whom the pool may be an unknown novelty. Is there any kind of fence that prevents unattended access, or an automatic cover that allows us to close the pool, or even an alarm that works properly? If not, we must take into account the investment that will guarantee security for our children.
Paying attention to all these elements will make us aware of what it will really entail the development of our new pool, avoiding unpleasant surprises, and will allow us to make better decisions.
